Melons

Melons are sweet juicy fruit from the gourd family. They are divided into two groups – Cucumis which comprises all melons except for watermelon and Citrullus which is watermelon. The term melon or muskmelon is used generically for all members of the Cucumis group.

Did you know?

  • All melons are thought to have originated in India.
  • The first recorded watermelon harvest occurred nearly 5,000 years ago in Egypt.
  • Always wash the outside of melons before cutting into them to keep them safe to eat.
  • Cantaloupes are named for the papal gardens of Cantalupo, Italy, where some historians say this species of melon was first grown.
  • A crenshaw melon is a cross between cantaloupe and casaba melons.
  • Galia melons are a hybrid that resemble a cantaloupe on the outside and a honeydew melon on the inside.
  • Melons often taste better if left unrefrigerated for a few days before you cut and eat them.
